Untimely penalties and an injury-plagued offense hampered Weatherford in a 16-13 loss to Boswell Oct. 20 at Kangaroo Stadium.
Roo fans found out Friday that star running back JoJo Polk had been ruled out for the season due to an ankle injury from the previous week at North Crowley. To add insult to injury, quarterback CJ Thornton was sidelined again during the Boswell game, presumably with a similar shoulder issue that kept him out for a month earlier in the season.
Weatherford also committed an uncharacteristic 12 penalties for 126 yards.
Before he left the game, Thornton threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Colton McClure in the first quarter.
The low point of the game for Weatherford was a safety the Roos suffered on a screen pass in the third quarter, giving Boswell a 9-7 lead.
Bradley Simmons ripped off a 13-yard touchdown run with 5:45 left in the fourth quarter. A failed two-point conversion attempt fell short, giving Weatherford a 13-9 lead.
Boswell scored the go-ahead touchdown with 1:42 left in the game on a 2-yard rush from Donte Reese.
The Weatherford defense held the Pioneers to 92 yards rushing and 150 passing.
The Roos fell to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in District 3-6A. Their playoff hopes are still alive, though, as a three-way tie with Boswell and L.D. Bell would fall in Weatherford’s favor due to head-to-head point differentials.
The Roos travel to Pennington Field Friday, Oct 27 to face Trinity (5-3, 4-1) at 7:30 p.m.
