Runners compete at state course
The Weatherford cross country teams got a taste of running on the state course while competing Saturday, Sept. 19, in the Hoka McNeil Invitational at Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock.
The Lady Roos finished second, and the boys team finished third while competing in the regular 6A race. Remi Boone finished 20th out of 245 runners in the gold with a time of 18 minutes, 34 seconds.
The Weatherford girls team was led by Ivy Scott who finished 12th overall with a time of 20:47. The Lady Roos’ top five runners who led to the team’s total also included Anna Wyatt (15th), Charlotte Farhat (17th), Nayelli Ordonez (19th), and Aaliyah Dixon (20th).
The Weatherford boys team saw Aiden Houghton lead the team in 27th place with a time of 17:29. The Roos’ top five runners who scored points toward the team totals also included Aiden Breaux (40th), Justin French (41st), James Roe ( 58th), and Saul Saldivar (61st).
Weatherford coach Van Green thought his teams did fair.
“Only Remi ran in the gold race and had a great performance,” Green said. “The other groups ran at 9:30 and 10 a.m. where it was considerably hotter. They did well and fought through adversity. Girls were able to run as a pack and get second without, Remi which was a big, confidence booster for them. The course was tough, but it is supposed to be and that was a reason I took them so they can get experience on a state-level course. Hopefully this pays dividends down the road.”
Weatherford is scheduled to compete Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Byron Nelson Invitational at Northlake Park in Corinth.

In the seven doubles matches, Weatherford lost only four games. In the singles matches that finished, only eight games were won.
First-position Will Snider won both his singles match and second-position doubles match with Matthew Trevino by the same score, 8-1. First-position boys doubles team of Brady Dearman and Omar Aguilera won their match 8-2. Dearman won his second-position singles match 8-2 while Aguilera played in the fifth-position, winning 8-0.
Dylan Poston and Konner Nickerson won their third-position boys doubles match 8-0. The mixed-doubles pair of Brigham Harmer and Amaya Maly also won their match 8-0.
The girls side was just as dominant in the double play. Addy Patterson and Liath Williamson won their match 8-1 in the first position, and the second-position team of Madeline Jordan and Addy Melven also won their match 8-1. The third-position team of Makayla Ford and Anna Spencer did not allow their opponents to win a game, with the score of 8-0.
Only Williamson was able to finish her singles matche (8-1) since the team win had already been secured.
The win improves Weatherford’s district record to 3-3. Heading into the final regular season duel, the Roos need to win to earn the district’s final playoff spot.
It is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29 at Arlington High.
