BASEBALL

Bearcats among state’s best in preseason poll

The defending Class 5A Division I state champion Aledo Bearcats will enter the 2026 season ranked No. 5 in the state in overall Class 5A by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association. The top four are defending Class 5A Division II state champion Grapevine, Lucas Lovejoy, Smithson Valley, and Kingwood Park.

Brock is also among the state preseason rankings at No. 6 in Class 4A.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Weatherford Tison vs. Granbury

Seventh grade: A Team won 32-25, B Team won 15-8. Players of the Game, Cayden Kell, Wyatt Shouse.

Eighth grade: A Team won 40-13, B Team won 31-25. Players of the Game, Max Davis, Mason Monterosa, Dillon Monterosa, Jonathan Salter, Matthew Roberts.

CHEERLEADING

Lady Roos eighth in state

The Weatherford High School Cheer Team competed in the UIL 6A Division II State Spirit Championship this past weekend in Fort Worth, defending their 2025 state title. This season they finished eighth.

This weekend they are competing in the National Cheerleading Association High School Nationals Jan. 23-25, also at the Fort Worth Convention Center.

Weatherford Tison vs. Granbury

Eighth grade: B Team won 27-14, Players of the Game, Anna Casey and Camryn Perkins.

Seventh grade: B Team lost 15-6, POG, Hannah Dearman.

A games were postponed.

SOCCER

Lady Roos 2, FW Arlington Heights 1

Down 0–1 at the half, the Lady Roos respond with two second-half goals to earn the comeback win.

SOFTBALL

First Ladycat scrimmage Saturday

The Aledo Ladycats will host the first of what will be five preseason scrimmages Saturday when they host Flower Mound Marcus at 11:30 a.m. Other scrimmages are:

  • Jan. 27, Joshua and Boswell at Boswell, TBA.
  • Jan. 31, host Abilene and Euless Trinity, starting at 11 a.m.
  • Feb. 3, host Burleson Centennial, 6:30 p.m.
  • Feb. 6, host Midlothian Heritage, 7 p.m.
  • The regular season begins Feb. 10 at Lucas Lovejoy at 5:30 p.m.

SWIMMING

Weatherford at Granbury

The Roos and Lady Roos competed in Granbury. Weatherford highlights include:

  • Bethany Crowe, first in 200 IM and 100 Backstroke.
  • Logan Crowe, first in 100 Butterfly and 50 Freestyle.
  • Next Up: District meet, Jan. 23.

WRESTLING

Texas Select at at Texas Nationals/Come & Take It Duals

Texas Select Wrestling grapplers, representing Aledo Wrestling Club, delivered outstanding performances at the Texas Nationals individual tournament and the accompanying Come & Take It Duals, held January 10-11 at the Legends Event Center in Bryan.

State championship invitations were on the line for athletes finishing top six in Open divisions. Highlighted by multiple champions, several runner-up finishes, and a standout. Most Outstanding Wrestler award to Reece Lizak in the 58-pound category in Girls Division 2. She also finished first in that division.

Other highlighted performances:

  • D3 Open 100 pounds: 1. Tobin Russell.
  • D3 Girls 1, 46 pounds: 1. Ruby Kate Richards.

State Qualifiers are:

  • Girls D2, 75: 2. Rylee Russell.
  • Girls D3, 65: 3. Marley McGrain; 4. Lexi Howell.

  • Boys D4 Open, 80: 2. Cameron Lizak.
  • Boys D3, Open 85: 4. Paxton Dyson.
  • Boys D3, Open 95: 6. Grayson Andre.
  • Boys D2, Open 115: 5. Graham Scott.
  • Boys D5, Open 120-126: 2. Noah Andre.

New wrestler highlights include:

  • Girls D1, Novice 80: 2. Pamela Austin.
  • Boys D3, Novice 85: 4. Ethan Austin.
  • Boys D4, Novice 120: 2. Colin Austin.
  • Boys D4, Novice 126-132: 2. Matthias Chael Zamora.

Adding to the weekend’s success, Texas Select wrestlers posted strong results in the Come & Take It Duals. Four wrestlers — Lizak, Dyson, Nathaniel Heard, and Russell — joined a composite squad with athletes from Liberty Christian, forming “Warrior Up.” The team placed fourth overall in a highly competitive field. 

Standout highlights included Dyson going undefeated to earn All-American honors and Lizak finishing with a 5-1 record.
