Gladchuk commits to UT

Luke Gladchuk of the Aledo Bearcats has committed to play for the University of Texas Longhorns next season. Gladchuck helped the Bearcats win the Class 5A Division I state championship in June, defeating Smithson Valley 8-1.

It was the Bearcats’ second title in program history, the first coming 11 years earlier to the day in 2014.

FOOTBALL

Dave Campbell’s honors

Several Aledo Bearcats received preseason accolades in this year’s edition of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine.

Topping the honors is wide receiver Kaydon Finley. The senior, who has signed to play for Notre Dame next season, was named to the third team offense of the magazine’s Super Team.

Finley was also named to the publication’s Top 10 players on their Texas 300 list. He is also predicted to be the District 3-5A Division I Most Valuable Player.

Defensive lineman Carson Dempsey and offensive lineman Payton Williams, both seniors, were also selected among the Best of the Rest in the Texas 300.

In District 3-4A Division II, Brock defensive back Col Mason is the preseason choice for Defensive MVP.

The Eagles are also home for their season opener as they will take on Sacred Heart School on Friday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. They compete in the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools.

TCA has a new head coach, Scott Campbell, who hopes to turn the program around after going 3-17 the past two seasons.

Weatherford Christian prepping for season

The Lions, a TAPPS six-man program, return five offensive and five defensive starters from last season as they try to reverse their fortunes of 2024’s 0-10 season.

WC was 11-2 two years in the debut season of head coach Colt Jones.
