Jack Mitchell of Weatherford hopes to repeat as the national high school bull riding champion next week. He is one of two qualifiers from Weatherford to qualify for the National High School Finals Rodeo.

Competition begins Sunday, July 13, and runs through Saturday, July 19, at the Sweetwater Events Complex in Rock Springs, Wyoming.

Joining Mitchell will be Brodey Clemons in calf roping. Each finished second in their respective events at the Texas High School Rodeo Association Finals, which wrapped up June 14 in Abilene. The top four in each event qualified for the NHSRA Finals.

Clemons is also returning to nationals. He was sixth in tiedown roping in 2024. He is the younger brother of PRCA roper and Resistol 2024 Rookie of the Year Cole Clemons.

Mitchell won a thrilling competition for the national title in 2024. He finished with an aggregate score of 230.5 to take the crown by a single point over fellow Texan John Crimber of Sunset.

Clemons was the top performing tiedown roper from Texas, finishing less than two seconds out of the top spot in the overall average. He was just 0.66 seconds out of third.

Each overcame slow starts at the THSRA Finals to finish second in the second go-round and short go to vault them a runner-up overall finish.

Clemons also competed in team roping at the Texas finals and finished 10th with partner Tripp Pittman of Lipan.

Also at the Texas finals:

Madison McCulloch of Weatherford placed seventh in girls cutting.

Will Bushaw of Weatherford, a two-time national qualifier and 2022 national runner-up, competed in boys cutting but did not advanced to the finals with runs of seventh in the opening round and 15th in the second.

McCulloch also competed in reined cow horse but did not advance to finals and the same for Collier Cowdrey of Millsap in steer wrestling and calf roping.
