The Weatherford Kangaroos kept their playoff hopes alive, dominating the first half and holding on to defeat Saginaw Boswell 17-9 in a District 3-6A game at Kangaroo Stadium Friday, Nov. 1.
It was the Kangaroos’ second win of the season and their second straight victory after defeating Mansfield Lake Ridge 34-28 the week prior in overtime.
Despite starting the season 0-7, Weatherford (2-7, 2-3 in district) will face Mansfield High (7-2, 3-2) Friday, Nov. 8 at Vernon Newsom Stadium with a chance to reach the playoffs. A win would create a three-way tie for third place in district between the Kangaroos, Mansfield and Mansfield Legacy.
Legacy defeated Weatherford 55-14 in Mansfield on Oct. 4. Mansfield edged Legacy 24-21 on Oct. 18.
Against Boswell, Weatherford built a 14-0 first-quarter lead after two scoring drives and a defensive stand. A 1-yard quarterback keeper by Brooks Kerbow capped off a 12-play, 76-yard drive to open the game.
The Kangaroo defense held the Pioneers (0-9, 0-5) on their first drive, forcing Boswell to give the ball up on downs on their own 37-yard line. The short field allowed Weatherford to score five plays later on a 23-yard Bryant Davis touchdown catch from Kerbow.
The Roos tacked on a 21-yard Juan Perez field goal to go ahead 17-3 with 4:26 left in the second quarter, a score that would stand going into halftime.
The second half was hard to watch for fans of both teams as Weatherford committed two fumbles and Boswell threw an interception, lost a fumble, and turned the ball over on downs twice.
The exception was a 71-yard touchdown run by Pioneer sophomore phenom Chance Lassiter. But it was too little, too late and Weatherford celebrated the victory in their last home game of the regular season.
Kerbow was 11-of-16 for 129 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions. Lassiter ran for 114 yards on 20 carries with the one score.
Weatherford won despite committing 11 penalties for 74 yards.
