The Kangaroos lost 5-0 against the Eagles and 4-2 against Boswell, but did squeeze in a non-district game against Martin in the middle they won 9-7.
Weatherford had lost the first game of the series against Lake Ridge on an extra-innings error and was hoping it could switch its fortunes around in the second game played at home against the Eagles. Unfortunately that did not happen.
It was scoreless in the first two innings before Lake Ridge got on the board. An error on a ground ball to first base allowed one run to score. Two batters later, a double allowed two more runs to score as the Eagles led 3-0.
The Kangaroos had little offensive success, only getting on base thanks to two walks and a hit batter up until the sixth inning. Facing Lake Ridge’s relief pitcher, Fabian Ortega got the team’s first hit of the game on a leadoff single. Unfortunately the next batter grounded into a double-play.
Still, Weatherford’s next two batters threatened by drawing walks, putting two runners on base. Unfortunately the next batter struck out swinging for out three.
In the seventh inning, the Eagles added to their lead with a double that drove in two runs to make the score 5-0. The Kangaroo bats had no such luck in the final at-bats as Lake Ridge held on to win.
Ortega’s hit was the only one of the game for Weatherford. With the Eagles committing no fielding errors, the Kangaroos four walks and one hit batter were all of the base runners they were able to get in the game.
Weatherford hoped to wash the disappointment off itself by traveling to Martin the next day for a non-district game.
The Kangaroos got going in the first inning with Cutter Kennedy grounding out to the shortstop, but driving in a run before Nick Soto hitting a sacrifice fly ball. Weatherford led 2-0.
The Warriors tied the score at 2-2 in the same inning with two RBI singles.
After a scoreless second inning, Weatherford got ahead with two more sacrifice fly balls from both Kennedy and Soto as the Kangaroos led 4-2. Again, Martin tied the score in the same inning, with an RBI double and a fielder’s choice out at third base driving home another run.
Weatherford took the lead for good in the fourth inning with a two out rally. Devin Walls hit an RBI single. Two batters later Brooks Kerbow hit an RBI single followed Kennedy and Soto doing the same as well as the Kangaroos doubled their score as they led 8-4.
In the fifth inning, Weatherford added one more run as Ortega’s ground ball to the shortstop resulted in an error that allowed one run to score and make it 9-4.
Martin tried to claw back with a two RBI single in the fifth inning to cut the lead to 9-6. In the final inning, a groundout to second base allowed one run to score to make it 9-7, but the Kangaroos held on to earn the final out next at-bat with a strikeout.
Kennedy and Soto led the team with three RBIs each while Kerbow had a team high three hits to go along with one RBI. As a team Weatherford finished with eight hits and drew three walks while taking advantage of the Warriors committing four fielding errors.
The win was needed heading into the first game of the next series against Boswell, another team like Lake Ridge battling for the top of the district standings.
The scoreless tie was broken in the third inning when Logan Chaix hit an RBI triple, but thanks to an error on the throw into the infield, Chaix was able to come in and score to make it 2-0 for the Kangaroos.
The lead didn’t last long as Pioneers answered in the same inning. A ground out to third base allowed one run to score. Two batters later, Boswell hit a two-run home run to take the lead. Later in the same inning, a double drove in one run as the Pioneers led 4-2.
From there Weatherford was not able to get another base runner until the final at-bats in the seventh inning, drawing a walk with two outs before the next batter grounded out to end the game.
Chaix led the team with two hits and one RBI. As a team the Kangaroos finished with four hits and drew one walk.
In the mound, Kennedy pitched all six innings and allowed four runs, one earned run, on four hits while striking out six. The defense committed three fielding errors.
Weatherford is sitting just outside of the the playoffs seeding with a 5-4 record, but is scheduled to play the fourth seed Mansfield next week to finish up the regular season.
The Kangaroos are next scheduled to play Boswell on April 17 at 7 p.m. at home. Weatherford has a non-district game scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Denton Guyer before hosting Mansfield at 7 p.m. on April 21.
