Owen Coates topped all area athletes with a pair of gold medal performances at this past weekend’s Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools State Track Meet at Panther Stadium in Hewitt.

Oates, a junior, topped the field in both the 110-meter and 300 hurdles. He clocked a time of 14.50 seconds in the former to win by .49 seconds, while the latter race was a bit closer with his time of 38.44 winning by .11 seconds.

This was Oates’ second consecutive year to win state in the 110 hurdles. He also finished second as a freshman.

“I thought he’d win both, but he came into the 300 hurdles seeded fourth and I knew he was better than that. He put it another gear and proved me right,” TCA coach Steve Hale said. “What we saw from Owen was strength and conditioning, something we’re trying to establish in our whole athletic program.”

In addition this season, Oates placed eighth in the pole vault and ran the anchor leg of the eighth-place 4x400 relay.

Also from TCA, freshman Charlotte Parker posted a second-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 11.75 inches and was third in the 100 hurdles, clocking 16.14. She also placed seventh in the high jump and ran a leg of the seventh-place 4x100 relay.

Paisley James, a sophomore, also brought home a medal with her second-place finish in the girls pole vault, clearing 9 feet. Senior Kadin James, likewise, won silver in the boys shot put with a throw of 50-11.25.

“I told our kids it would be a successful meet if we PR’d and they did that,” Hale said. “Track season is a long season, but our kids were ready for state.

“In the postseason you go up against great competition every time and our kids met the test and succeeded.”
