The Marcia Walters Memorial Thanksgiving Trot has named the Thompson Family as its 2025 recipient.
Board member Whitney Harris said the decision is always a difficult one.
Cole Thompson, local business man and volunteer, suffered as ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) while coaching his children at the Aledo Athletics ball fields. He was in a coma for a number of weeks before passing.
Cole left behind his wife, Niki, and sons Tagg (6) and Troop (5).
“She’s been a stay-at-home mom since Tag was born, but maybe even before that,” Harris said of Niki. “Cole was the lifeline and the sole provider for the family. He had some life insurance set up, but nothing that would prepare her to raise these boys for the next 15 years of their lives.”
Funds from this year’s Thanksgiving Trot will be used to cover medical costs of Cole’s care not covered by their insurance, as well as future needs of their children such as medical, educational, and daily living expenses.
Niki has been a mainstay on The Thanksgiving Trot board for several years. It is her hope to pay funds forward to worthy causes that benefit the greater good in Cole’s memory. She said she is so thankful and humbled to be the recipient this year. After being on the Trot committee from day one, she has witnessed lives changed through the generosity of our community and she is overwhelmed with gratitude to be one of them.
Since its inception in 2010, Thanksgiving Trot has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local families who have experienced catastrophic medical costs and circumstances.
All proceeds from registrations and sponsorships, less the cost of t-shirts and needed signs, go directly to the recipient.
The 2025 race will be held at Tim Buchanan Stadium on Thanksgiving morning.
