The Supersonic Track Club made the transition last summer from the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation to the Amateur Athletic Union with success, qualifying seven athletes to the Junior Olympics.
This summer is off to a solid encore as the team qualified 22 athletes for the upcoming AAU Southwest Regional Meet from June 24-28 at the University of Texas at Arlington. They qualified by finishing in the top 16 of their respective events at the AAU Southwest District Meet — also at UTA — earlier this month.
The top six from regionals will qualify for the AAU Junior Olympics from July 27-Aug. 8 in Des Moines, Iowa.
While two of the athletes have opted out of competing at regionals, according to coach Richard Searcy, Supersonic is still taking a healthy contingent into the meet.
Sawyer Loe will compete in five events in the 14-Under Boys division. At district he was second in the 800-meter run, third in the 200, and ran legs of the first-place 4x400 and third place 4x800 relays. In addition, he plans to compete in the pentathlon at regionals, an event not at district.
Several athletes will compete in four events, including Anna Wyatt (16U Girls) in the 400 hurdles, 800, 1500, triple jump; Colsen Ing (14U Boys) in the 400, 800, 4x400 relay, 4x800 relay; and Carlito Richards (14U Boys) in the 400, long jump, 4x400 relay, 4x800 relay.
“Just a lot if hard work is paying off. We been practicing since spring break, but some have been working since our winter Saturday workouts,” Searcy said. “I’m hoping we send all 20 to the JO’s.”
