The Weatherford Lady Roos had a nearly perfect senior night when they beat Granbury on Tuesday, Oct. 13.
The Lady Roos won 3-0 against a Lady Pirates team poised to enter the playoffs as well as Weatherford, which improved to 25-13 overall and 9-2 in district.
The first two sets were a breeze for Weatherford. The senior night emotions from before the game seemed to galvanize the team to play its best as the Lady Roos won the sets 25-16 and 25-10.
“Because the bond on this team is so strong, all of those emotions amped us up more than got in our heads and distracted us,” Weatherford coach Courtney Hammett said.
Granbury coming off such a dud in the second set came out with something to prove in Set 3 while Weatherford ever so slightly took its foot off the gas.
The Lady Roos fell behind 6-3 after never trailing in the first two sets. Weatherford tied the score at 9 before falling behind 19-16.
After a Granbury hitting error, Ava Broadie hit two straight kills to tie the match before Joy Versola’s ace gave the Lady Roos their first lead at 20-19.
Following a service error that tied the score at 20, Broadie hit another kill followed by Eloise Beauchamp slamming an over-pass down at the net for another kill. Broadie then followed with an ace to put Weatherford up 23-20.
Following a Lady Roo hitting error, Broadie hit a kill to make it match point for Weatherford at 24-21. Granbury won the next two points with a kill and a Lady Roo hitting error to close the distance to 24-23 before Weatherford’s Isabella Hale hit the match-winning kill. The Lady Roos won the set 25-23.
Broadie led the team with 14 kills and three aces while Laine Tomlinson was second with 10 kills. Versola had 24 assists to direct the offense. Defensively, Hayden Faught had 15 digs while Hale had three blocks to lead the team.
Hammett tried to prep her team ahead of the third set, knowing the Lady Pirates would play well after the second set.
“We talked about it before the third set started,” Hammett said. “Don’t relax; don’t get complacent. There is still a lot of volleyball left. We talk about that a lot. If you sit back and relax, any team and Granbury is a good team, can come back and beat you. It took a couple of resets and good swings from some of our key players to wake us up and find our momentum again.”
Weatherford is scheduled to play at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, at Arlington Bowie.
The Weatherford Lady Roos were able to keep the good play going with a win on the road at Arlington Lamar on Friday, Oct. 9.
The Lady Roos won 3-0 against the Lady Vikings to win their fifth straight district match.
Weatherford won the first two sets 25-14 before finishing off in Set 3 with the score of 25-17.
Laine Tomlinson led the team with 17 kills and 11 digs while Ava Broadie and Isabella Hale added 11 and nine kills to help pace the offense. Joy Versola had a team high 20 assists while Natalie Griffin was second with 18. At the service line, Griffin led the team with six aces.
Weatherford coach Courtney Hammett was glad her team came out and took care of business on the road.
“We’ve learned playing another team’s style of game can hurt us,” Hammett said. “No matter who is on the other side of the net we have to play our game, our tempo, our speed the entire match. The girls did that on Friday against Lamar.”
