BASKETBALL

Aledo duo stand out in TABC showcase

Aledo seniors-to-be Josiah Jenkins and Caden Cunningham, both guards, had standout performances in the recent Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Showcase. The event is designed for players to demonstrate their skills before college scouts.

Jenkins scored 29 points, added four steals, and shot 69.2% from the field. Cunning scored 18 points with three rebounds and three assists.

CLAY SHOOTING

Aledo Clay Busters

Aledo Clay Busters will hold tryouts on Aug. 5 at Fort Worth Trap & Skeet, 1064 Ranch to Market Rd. 2871 at 6 p.m. It is open to students in grades 5-12, new or returning members.

Athletes will meet coaches and fellow shooters and learn about the coming season. Expectations, cost and scheduling for the coming season will be discussed.

Girls flag football clinics 

Aledo High School is exploring starting girls flag football as a school club sport playing in the Dallas Cowboys Girls Flag Football League this coming school year. If you’re an incoming girl in grades 9-12 who is interested, you’re invited to one or all of the three upcoming interest clinics. Each clinic lasts from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and will be held at Vierling Field (DNG field) on July 12, July 19, and Aug. 2.

Hansen camp set

July 12 is the date for the second annual Hayden Hansen Elite Skills Camp at Weatherford High School. The camp has two sessions, with grades 2-5 going from 9-11 a.m. and grades 6-8 going from noon-2 p.m.

Weatherford’s Bruton among AJGA leaders

Carter Bruton of the Weatherford Kangaroos tied for fifth in a recent American Junior Golf Association event, competing against some of the nation’s top junior players. He posted rounds of 73-73-69, with his closing round tying for low round of the final day.

Aledo tryouts set

Tryouts for the 2026-27 Aledo Bearcats and Ladycats golf teams will be July 31 at 10 a.m. at Squaw Creek Golf Course. Cost is $20 per participant.

Those attending must:

  • Have a physical on file in RankOne or bring a hard copy.
  • Have last year’s grades and report card.
  • Bring your own golf clubs.
  • Wear collared shirts.
  • Have a knowledge of the game and rules.
  • Have your own water bottle.

The tryouts will include:

  • Short game evaluations.
  • Long game evaluations on driving range.
  • Playing nine holes walking.
  • Golf etiquette.
  • Commitment to the team for keeping up grades, travel to competition and practice.

WHS tryouts

Girls July 29, boys July 30 at Canyon West Golf Club. Participants need to bring:

  • $20 green fee (cash or check.
  • Water bottle.
  • Copy of last year’s report card.

Also:

  • Wear a collared shirt (no T-shirts or denim).
  • Have a completed physical on file in Rank One.

Format:

  • Skills testing (driving, irons, short game, putting).
  • Evaluation of golf skills, knowledge of rules and etiquette.

VOLLEYBALL

AVC Mini-season

Aledo Volleyball Club will host its Bruisers Mini-Season July 11, 18, 25 and Aug. 1. Sessions are:

Grades 1-2, 9-10 a.m.

Grades 3-4, 10:15-11:15 a.m.

Grades 5-6, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Adult League Tournament

Aledo Volleyball Club will host an Adult League Tournament July 17, starting at 4:30 p.m. There will be two divisions, For Fun and Competitive.

Cost is $15 per player. Register individually or create your own team of up to six players.

Prizes will be awarded to the winning team in each division. The tournament is double elimination.
