Breleigh Mayer, a senior, placed 10th in the 148-pound weight class, lifting a total of 860 pounds. Mallory Morgan, a sophomore, placed 11th in the 198 division, lifting 820 total pounds.
Both were career-bests.
Mayer’s breakdown included career bests of a squat lift of 350 pounds, a bench press of 185, and a deadlift of 325. Morgan had a squat lift career best of 330, along with a bench of 155 and a deadlift of 335.
“Breleigh ended her career in a big way. Her goal coming into this season was to simply make the state meet in the most competitive weight class in our region,” Aledo coach Josh Morgan said. “She qualified for the meet by hitting the automatic qualifying total of 800 pounds at the regional meet. She didn’t let up and trained hard during spring break - while also playing catcher for the Aledo Ladycat softball team - and had the best meet of her career.”
Concerning Morgan, the coach said, “Mallory showed tremendous progress over her sophomore year and has a bright future in front of her. She added to her total and learned what it was like to compete at a big time meet. She can use this experience to help lead the team during her junior and senior seasons while individually moving up the rankings.”
In addition to her lifting performance at state, Mayer is one of four Ladycats to earn academic all-state honors from the Texas Women’s High School Powerlifting Association. She was named to the Elite Team.
Also on the Elite Team from Aledo are Alli Faulkner, Melaney LaPraim, and Tina LaPraim.
To qualify, a lifter must be a senior, in good standing, possess good moral character, and maintain a grade-point average of 92 or above calculated from grades 9-11 plus the first semester of senior year. The school must also be in good standing with the THSWPA.
