The young Weatherford Lady Roos volleyball team was able to log some more court time and finished fourth at their first tournament Aug. 13-15.
The Lady Roos went 6-3 at the tournament in Georgetown, making plenty of memories off the court visiting several fun places to bond as a group.
The Lady Roos started Day 1 of the tournament playing great, winning in straight sets against St. Michael’s (25-14, 25-12), Hyde Park (25-20, 25-15) and East View (25-20, 25-16).
Day 2 was not as easy despite picking up wins against Gateway (25-22, 25-16) and Clear Falls (25-9, 25-20). Against Vandergrif, Weatherford stumbled losing two close sets (27-25, 25-20).
Despite the one loss, the Lady Roos’ 5-1 record the first two days qualified them for the gold bracket on the final day. Weatherford dismantled Leander (25-17, 25-15) before losing a close three-set match to Rock Hill (18-25, 25-22, 20-25).
The loss bumped the Lady Roos from the championship game, and they played Salado in the third-place game. Two close sets by the same score (25-23) did not go Weatherford’s way as the team finished in fourth place.
Weatherford’s Laine Tomlinson recorded 55 kills and a team-high 17 aces and was named to the all-tournament team. Hayden Faught was also named to the all-tournament team after leading the team with 74 digs.
Ava Broadie led the team with 73 kills while Joy Versola recorded 100 assists. Mia Hargis added a team-high 12 blocks.
Weatherford lost a five-set match at Frisco Heritage on Tuesday, Aug. 18.
The Lady Roos won the first set 25-21 before dropping the next two sets 25-22 and 25-21. With its back against the wall, Weatherford came back strong in the fourth set 25-19 to force a fifth and final set.
It went back and forth and went down to the wire, but the Lady Roos came up just short 15-13 to lose the match 3-2. It is Weatherford’s second five-set loss of its short season, and the team’s record sits at 6-5.
Weatherford is next scheduled to play at the Granbury tournament, which began Thursday and runs through Saturday, Aug. 22. Next week the Lady Roos are scheduled to host Duncanville at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25.
