The Weatherford Lady Roos earned a 3-1win Tuesday, Sept. 1, on the road at Azle.
Weatherford started the match on fire, dominating Azle in its 25-11 win in the first set.
That result might have led to the team letting its guard down entering the second set, which allowed the Lady Hornets to make it a game. In the most competitive stretch of the match, Azle was able to pull out the win 25-22 to tie the match at 1.
Having learned their lesson, the Lady Roos made sure to pick back up the intensity and won the third and fourth sets 25-19 and 25-15.
Laine Tomlinson led the team with 21 kills with Ava Broadie right behind her with 20 kills and a team-high six service aces. Setters Joy Versola and Natalie Griffin directed the offense with 24 and 21 assists, respectively.
On defense, libero Hayden Faught led the team with 19 digs while Mia Hargis had five blocks.
Coach Courtney Hammett said she was pleased with her team’s performance despite too many self-inflicted errors in the second set.
“I was proud how the team responded after a really tough weekend tournament,” Hammett said.
The Weatherford Lady Roos struggled in their final tournament at Arlington High School on Friday-Saturday, Aug. 28-29.
The Lady Roos went 1-3 overall, though played some close matches overall with the format being a traditional best-of-five instead of best of three.
Weatherford first played McGill-Toolen and lost a heartbreaker 3-2. The Lady Roos won the first two sets 25-21, 25-16 before the Lady Jackets came from behind to win the final three sets 25-17, 25-23 and 15-11.
It was a tough match to get over, but Weatherford had to play a vaunted Mansfield Lake Ridge team later in the day. The Lady Roos showed some resolve, winning the first set 25-20, but would lose the second and third sets 25-19 before falling 26-24 in a white-knuckle Set 4.
Weatherford started Day 2 with a match against Mansfield Legacy. After losing the first set 25-19, the Lady Roos were right there in Sets 2 and3, but fell just short in both, losing 26-24 and 29-27.
Weatherford needed something to go its way and in the final match of the tournament against Richland, they got it. In a back-and-forth match, it was the Lady Roos that came from behind to win it all 3-2 (17-25, 25-14, 22-25, 25-20, 15-13), ending the tournament on a high note.
Laine Tomlinson led Weatherford with 70 kills and was named to the all-tournament team. Ava Broadie was second with 51 kills while leading the team with nine service aces. Eloise Beauchamp led the team with 14 blocks, followed by Mia Hargis with 12 blocks. Joy Versola led the team with 86 assists.
With district play kicking off this week, Hammitt is said she is pleased with where her team is and has high hopes for them.
“I feel confident in the team,” Hammett said. “I feel like we’ve learned a lot this preseason. We’ve grown a lot both mentally and physically. I think the girls are excited and ready to go for district.”
Weatherford is scheduled to start district play at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, at Arlington Martin.
