The Weatherford Kangaroos racked up 484 yards of offense in a 44-19 rout of Keller Central at the Keller ISD Athletic Complex Friday night, Aug. 25.
Weatherford senior quarterback CJ Thornton was an efficient 15-of-22 passing for 201 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. All of Thornton's touchdowns went to Xavier Holder, who caught five balls for 114 yards.
The Kangaroo offense sputtered at first, as Weatherford trailed 3-0 at the end of the first quarter. But the Roos exploded with a 28-point second quarter, highlighted by a spectacular halfback pass from Keats Bohannon to Holder for a 37-yard touchdown.
Backup quarterback Lane Cowley threw a touchdown pass on his first official varsity attempt, a 29-yard toss to Robert Taylor in the fourth quarter. It was the Roos’ fifth passing touchdown of the night.
Defensively, Andrew Groh had seven tackles and Jackson Thompson had six. Liam Riley and Jamie Gray each pulled in an interception for the Roos.
Keller Central quarterback Landon Smith was 11-of-17 with two interceptions and no touchdowns. Backup Chevy Andrews threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter.
For the first game of the year, it was relatively clean for both teams on the penalty front. Weatherford was flagged six times for 50 yards and Keller Central had five penalties for 15 yards.
The Kangaroos (1-0) host Richardson Pearce (1-0) Friday at 8 p.m. Pearce beat Wylie High School 35-32 Friday night. Weatherford beat Pearce on the road last season, 41-31.
