There was a time in Parker County when we ran our elections on issues, not character assassination, and I urge all of us to return to that standard, insist that people campaign with integrity and respect. The local Party’s purpose is to have fair elections that engage all voters by registering, educating, and turning out the vote. Our County, State, and Federal elected officials’ purpose is to make and enforce the laws and Constitutions of our State and the United States. I’ve recently heard an organization present to a Party meeting that he supports litigating what he can’t get passed in the Legislature. That’s not the Republican way. We have never supported legislation from the Bench.
Thought I’d share a Story from the past…
The Republican Party of Texas is divided, between Conservatives and Radicals. They can’t or won’t negotiate to work together. It gets so bad that the radicals elect their own convention delegates and hold separate conventions.
Soon there are more splinter groups seeking to profit from the divide. Some of these groups even enlist the help of Democrats to beat their rivals.
The Democrats, seeing the weakness of the Republicans begin to exploit the division. They began winning Republican supporters by highlighting the divisive issues and trading on the anger of those involved.
Sound familiar?
While it may sound like the Republican Party of Texas today, this story relates to the newly formed RPT in 1867. Because of its inclusion of free blacks, the RPT had grown strong and was winning elections from Southern Democrats. The Party was generally disregarded when it was first formed but became a threat when it began to win elections.
The uncompromising division which occurred within the RPT in 1867 obliterated the political gains they had made and relegated Texas to Democrat majorities for the next 153 years!
This information was documented and published by the RPT’s Historian, Dr. Tom Westley in 2020. The full story can be found on the RPT website at https://texasgop.org/rp-history-newsletter-1/
Together we made this place we call home great, and together we must protect and defend against all threats. Keep Parker County, Texas, and America GREAT!
