Weatherford opens district with 3-0 loss

Lady Roos played at district power Arlington Martin

Posted
The Weatherford Lady Roos volleyball team opened district against one of the favorites to compete for a district title at Arlington Martin on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

The Lady Warriors won in straight sets over the young Lady Roos.

The first set was as close as it could get, but Martin came out on top 25-23 to take the early lead. Sets 2 and 3 saw the Lady Roos fall behind and put themselves in an early hole. While Weatherford fought back and played better as the sets wore on, both sets went to Martin by the score of 25-20 to close out the match.

Ava Broadie led the team with 15 kills while Bella Hale was second with 10. Joy Versola and Natalie Griffin directed the offense with 15 and 14 assists, respectively. Defensively, Laine Tomlinson led the team with 13 digs.

Coach Courtney Hammett thought her team came out timid to start the match.

“We had some first-district-game jitters,” Hammett said. “Our play reflected that.”

Hammett knows her young team starting out district against one of the top two teams in the district was a tough test; she hopes the experience will prove valuable for setting the level her team has to play at going forward.

The Lady Roos next two district matches are at home. Weatherford hosts Arlington Sam Houston at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, and Arlington Lamar at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15.

Lady Roos come back against Fossil Ridge

The Weatherford Lady Roos were able to come back from 2-0 to win against Fossil Ridge at homeFriday, Sept. 4, in their final non-district match.

The Lady Roos stormed back to win the final three sets to steal the match 3-2 and give the team a positive result before heading into a tough district stretch.

The first two sets were as close as could be played, but each time, Weatherford was just outplayed by the Lady Panthers, who won 25-23 in both sets to take a 2-0 lead.

From there, the Lady Roos turned their fortunes around, winning the third set 25-20 and the fourth set 25-19 to tie the match at 2.

In the fifth and final set, Weatherford was able to carry that momentum and won 15-7 to complete the come-from-behind victory.

Ava Broadie led the team with 17 kills and five blocks. Laine Tomlinson was second with 14 kills. Joy Versola dished out 31 assists. Hayden Faught had a team-high 25 digs. Broadie, Faught and Mia Hargis each had two service aces as well.

Coach Courtney Hammett thought her team looked a step behind for the first two sets of the match, but her team’s determination eventually led to them pulling off the come from behind win.

“One of the girls said coming out of our huddle for Set 3 and said, ‘get ready for a reverse sweep’ and it kind of lit a fire under everybody,” Hammett said.

It was the Lady Roos fifth five-set match of the season.
