Weatherford: Council approves purchase of new fire trucks

Hears residents’ concerns

Posted

Unanimously passing the purchase of two new firetrucks for $3.7 million, the Weatherford City Council had their eyes on the future July 22.

Weatherford Fire Chief Jonathan Peacock explained the need for both to meet the city’s rapid growth. According to Peacock, there will be no strain on the current budget, as payment is made upon completion of their construction, which is expected to be in 2027.

“Securing a place in the [production] queue locks in the current price before an [anticipated] increase in August of this year,” Peacock said. The two new trucks will replace a pumper and add an aerial unit to the department’s fleet.

When asked which buildings in town were the tallest, he said the Courthouse and a hotel near the interstate, and that the new unit will reach a height of 140,’ compared to the present ladder truck’s 105’ reach.

Resident concerns

Two residents spoke with concerns about an abandoned house and the Peach Festival’s allowing political influences during its run July 12.

Marcy Freeman, of S. Brazos, displayed photographs of an abandoned house in her neighborhood. According to Freeman, the owner died in 2013, and the house has been uninhabited since that time. Presently, the house is in need of repair and the yard is overgrown.

“Its condition has continued to deteriorate,” Freeman said, as she asked for help from the council. They assured her it would be investigated.

Jeanette Locket asked why the Republican Women’s Club was allowed to have a voter registration booth at the Peach Festival, while the Democrats were told they could only use the sidewalk in front of their headquarters. This goes against the Festival’s rule of being apolitical, according to Locket.

Mayor Paul Paschall assured her that the Chamber of Commerce was committed to upholding that regulation and that Chamber president Tammy Gazzola is the one to resolve the issue.

The council tabled a permit application for an RV park on 10 acres on Tin Top Road..

After their executive session, council members voted to file a lawsuit against a housing finance corporation.
