With about two minutes left Levi Hall caused a fumble inside his own 20 yard line, and Camryn Park scooped it up and ran about 45 yards to seal the Weatherford Kangaroos’ 35-28 victory over Arlington Lamar on Friday night, Oct. 9, at University of Texas at Arlington’s stadium.
"I saw Levi. He hit him, and I was like 'I got to go to end the game,'" Parker said.
Weatherford was up 14-0 at halftime. After a goal line stand to start the second quarter and a Quentin Martinez blocked field goal the Roos scored twice as quarterback Braelyn Jones connected with Parker Clark and Reed Tidwell on 18-yard and 40-yard touchdown passes.
The Vikings came out in the third quarter and got back in the game with three straight touchdown runs from speedy slot receiver Zarrien Howard, putting Lamar up 21-14.
The Roos answered on the first play of their next drive when Jones connected with Jakob Hemphill on a go-route for a 69-yard touchdown to tie the game.
Both teams scored quickly to start the fourth quarter. Vikings quarterback Brian Williams found Kenneth Onan over the middle for a 33-yard touchdown catch. Weatherford answered when Jones burst up the middle for a 50-yard touchdown run to knot the score at 28.
Weatherford took back the lead when running back D.J. Quimby burst off-tackle to the right side for a 37-yard touchdown run, putting the Roos up 35-28 with 3:08 left.
Lamar had all of its timeouts, but did not need them to quickly move down the field with chunk plays on wide receiver bubble screens. But, that’s when Hall stripped the ball and Parker picked it up and returned it to Lamar's 35 yard line with 1:24 left to play.
Despite the play, the offense had to execute since the Vikings still had all three of their timeouts.
Quimby had a chance to score on the first play, running to the 1 yard line, but followed Coach Marshall Williams’ instructions to not score -- instructions Williams later said he regrets telling him.
Despite that, Weatherford did try to score running three straight run plays but went backwards four yards. Facing a fourth down from the 5 yard line and after calling timeout with 17 seconds left in the game, Williams elected for his offense to try and score instead of kicking a 22-yard field goal. The offense was stopped again on fourth down, but the defense held on to keep Lamar out of the end zone in the final seconds with little drama.
Weatherford's season record improves to 4-2 and 2-1 in district play.
