After a 10-0 start to the volleyball season, the Aledo Ladycats suffered their first loss Tuesday, Aug. 18, at home to Mansfield.
The Tigers swept the Ladycats in three sets, 28-26, 25-21, and 25-17.
Aledo’s senior outside hitter Kaelee Berkley led Aledo with 13 kills, with junior right-side hitter Lily Morris finishing in second with six kills. Sophomore setter Harper Harbuck finished with a team-high 11 assists.
Defensively, senior libero Karsyn Evans led the Ladycats with 20 digs, while junior defensive specialist Avery Pipkins came behind at 16. The Ladycats ended up with 10 blocks combined.
The Ladycats fell behind in each set, but head coach Claire Gay singled out the second set as a major takeaway for the future.
“Overall, we had really good moments. I thought we came back in Set 2 from a big deficit, and I felt like that was character-building,” Gay said. “But overall, we can’t allow teams to capitalize without making adjustments, and they did that tonight.”
While it was a tough loss for the Ladycats, they’re using it as a learning opportunity for what’s to come.
“There’s a reason why we stack our preseason, and it’s to play really good teams that are going to show us things that we’re going to continue to work on,” Gay said. “I thought we broke down in communication. We have been a team full of energy, and I thought that was not very good tonight as a whole.”
The Ladycats (10-1) will look to rebound Aug. 20-22 during tournament play in Pflugerville, with matches against McNeil, Bowie, and Mansfield Lake Ridge.
