Aledo tennis started off district play with a bang, winning 18-1 at Granbury on Tuesday, Aug. 18.
Doubles play saw the Bearcats win six of the seven doubles matches. The Bearcats also dominated in singles play with an outright sweep, winning all 12 matches.
In singles play, Aledo’s Tai Van won two sets with a score of 6-1, good for the largest margin of the day. Boys doubles saw the team of Mason Peters and Bennett Purcell win 9-7, along with Tucker Thompson and Colt Harp taking their set 8-5.
Girls singles and doubles play featured a dominant performance all across the board, with Aledo sweeping the entire matchup. The Bearcats also won every matchup in mixed-doubles play, highlighted by strong performances by Van, Bailey Martin, Ty Hudson, and Blakely Naron.
The win improves the Bearcats to a 9-4 overall record and 1-0 district record. They’ll return home on Tuesday, Aug. 25, for a matchup with Arlington Martin, starting at 4 p.m.
The Aledo Bearcats/Ladycats wrapped up pre-district team tennis action with a split of matches last week. They fell 11-8 at home to Amarillo Tascosa on Aug. 12 and won 18-1 at Boswell on Aug. 14.
Against Tascosa, Aledo (8-4) had a strong showing on the women’s side, winning all eight team points. All three girls doubles teams earned points, while girls’ singles lines 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 also secured victories.
The men’s side battled throughout the match as well, with five of their points being decided in third-set tiebreakers.
Against Boswell, the Bearcats/Ladycats controlled the match from both sides of the ladder.
Aledo was opening District 3-6A competition in Granbury at press time. They will host Arlington Martin on Aug. 25 at 3:30 p.m.
This season brings a new challenge as the Bearcats move into 6A competition. However, the team returns a strong group of varsity players, including six seniors.
