The Weatherford Lady Roos kept the good play rolling with a one-sided win Tuesday, Oct. 6, at Arlington Sam Houston.
The Lady Roos won 3-0 with set scores of 25-9, 25-12, 25-10.
Weatherford coach Courtney Hammett did not have much to say about the game other than it was “ugly.”
The Lady Roos improve to 7-2 in district and are sitting in a tie with Arlington Martin for second place. Weatherford is scheduled to play at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, at home against Granbury.
The Weatherford Lady Roos played arguably their best match of the season to earn an important win over Arlington Martin on Friday, Oct. 2, at home.
The Lady Roos came back from losing the first set to win the match 3-1.
The first set saw the Lady Roos fall behind 11-5. Thanks to four errors from the Lady Warriors and Weatherford playing better, the score was eventually tied at 14. The score was neck and neck for rest of the set and could have gone either way.
With the score tied at 23, a Lady Roo service error and hitting error allowed Martin to squeak out the victory 25-23 to take a 1-0 lead.
Set 2 started with Weatherford getting out to an early 11-4 lead thanks to several hitting errors by the Lady Warriors and kills from Ava Broadie, Laine Tomlinson, and Isabella Hale.
The Lady Roos were able to keep Martin at length until a scary moment when the Lady Warriors cut the lead to 21-19 and then 23-21. Weatherford was able to execute as Hale hit a kill and Martin committed a hitting error to help the Lady Roos win 25-21 to tie the match at 1.
The third set was one where Weatherford lost five points in a row early on to fall behind 10-5 and later 12-6. The Lady Roos then went on an 8-2 run, getting blocks from Mayiah Polk and Eloise Bauechamp along with four kills from Broadie to tie the set up at 14.
The teams exchanged short runs as the score was later tied at 19 heading into the final few points. Tomlinson and Broadie had back-to-back emphatic kills. Martin responded with two kills, but also had a service error mixed in as Weatherford led 22-21.
Broadie had back-to-back kills to put the Lady Roos up 24-21 when Joy Versola hit a serve that just dribbled over the net for an ace that won Weatherford the set 25-21 and put the team up 2-1.
The fourth set the Lady Roos started in a 9-5 deficit, but then won five straight points thanks to service and hitting errors and a Broadie kill gave them the lead 10-9. Martin tied the score on a Lady Roo error, but Weatherford scored the next four points on a Polk kill, a Versola ace, a Beauchamp block, and Tomlinson kill.
The Lady Roos never trailed again. The Lady Warriors cut the lead to 15-14 and 18-17 but were not able to tie or take the lead.
Weatherford closed out the set getting the ball back on a service error, two Broadie kills, a kill from Hale and back-to-back aces from Tomlinson. Martin won two points on a kill and a block to stay alive, but a Mia Hargis kill sealed the deal and Weatherford won won the set 25-19.
Broadie led the team with 22 kills while Tomlinson was second with 15 kills and had a tea- high four aces. Setters Versola and Natalie Griffin both had 24 assists, but Versola set a career milestone during the match by earning her 500th assist, which was celebrated after the match. Defensively, Hayden Faught led the team with 22 digs while Tomlinson had 17.
Coach Courtney Hammett thought her team played as well as it did when it won the Granbury Tournament earlier in the season.
“We came in definitely wanting revenge,” Hammett said. “I told the girls after the first set they didn’t play bad. We needed to finish a few of those points cleaner and minimize our errors. If we could connect better on a few of those things, that score will be in reverse on the next set.”
The win moves the Lady Roos into a 6-2 record and tie with the Lady Warriors for second place in the district standings.
