Hauss Hejny’s long awaited first complete game as a starting college quarterback was one for the record books. The former Aledo Bearcat threw five touchdowns in his debut with the Colorado State Rams in a 35-13 victory against rival Wyoming in Fort Collins, Colorado, on Saturday, Sept. 5.

Hejny tied a CSU opening-day record with his five TD passes. He matched Nick Stevens in 2015 and K.J. Carter-Samuels in 2018.

In addition, he joined former Ram Garrett Grayson in 2014 as the only quarterbacks in school history to throw five touchdowns against Wyoming.

And it came in front of a record crowd of 40,548 fans at Canvas Stadium on the CSU campus. Among them were 17,573 of Hejny’s fellow students.

Hejny finished the day 23-of-33 for 214 yards and threw no interceptions. He also rushed seven times for 39 yards and even caught a pass for 28 yards as the Rams won their season-opener for the first time since 2017.

For his performance, Hejny was named the Pac-12 Conference Player of the Week. This was CSU’s debut in that league.

This was also the debut of new Rams head coach Jim Mora Jr. whose father is a former NFL head coach. He’s working to change the fortune of the Rams, who are coming off a 2-10 season and are 21-40 over the past five.

With the victory, the Rams regained possession of the Bronze Boot trophy that goes to the annual winner in the contest known as the Border War between the rivals. Wyoming had won seven of the previous nine meetings, including 28-0 last season.

While CSU leads the all-time series 61-52 with five ties, the Cowboys have a 32-27 advantage since the traveling trophy was introduced.

Hejny used to catch passes from another former Aledo quarterback who played for the Rams, Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi. Hejny was a wide receiver early in his high school career while Fowler-Nicolosi was the signal caller for the Bearcats in 2021 before Hejny quarterbacked Aledo to back-to-back state championships in 2022 and 2023.

Fowler-Nicolosi played for the Rams for almost three seasons, passing for 6,938 yards and 38 touchdowns. He left the program midway through the 2025 season and is now a backup for the Michigan Wolverines.

Against Wyoming, Hejny completed 70% of his passing attempts to 10 receivers with touchdowns of 6, 3, 57, 24, and 4 yards.

As a senior in high school, Hejny initially committed to play for Duke. However, he never played for the Blue Devils as he changed his commitment to TCU, where both of his parents were standout athletes.

In his one season with the Horned Frogs in 2024 he did not attempt a pass. He ran 15 times for 65 yards.

Hejny then transferred to Oklahoma State and won the starting job. In his one start he completed 5-of-10 passes for 96 yards and a TD, along with rushing four times for 27 yards and a score before leaving the game in the first quarter with a broken bone in his left foot. The Cowboys defeated Tennessee-Martin 27-7, their lone victory in a 1-11 season in 2025.
