Commissioners to hold special data center meeting

Residents encouraged to attend informational session

Data centers are a hot topic in Parker County and around Texas, with residents in affected areas often being taken by surprise that a data center could spring up in their vicinity.

Information and disinformation are both making their way onto social media. To address the need for information, the Parker County Commissioners Court is stepping in.

The Court will convene a special called meeting at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, June 9, to conduct a comprehensive assessment of industrial data center developments and their potential long-term impacts on local infrastructure, water resources, and the Texas power grid.

As technology infrastructure continues to expand rapidly across North Texas, the Commissioners Court is proactively evaluating the county’s legal authority, regulatory frameworks, and resource management strategies.

“Because counties operate under specific regulatory frameworks in unincorporated areas, this meeting will serve as a vital fact-finding session and discussion to clarify our legal obligations, understand the demands on our water table and power grid, and protect the quality of life for our residents,” a statement from the county said.

The special session will focus on four primary areas of evaluation, including but not limited to:

  • Legal & Regulatory Scope: Clarifying the statutory limits and authorities granted to Texas counties under the Local Government Code regarding unincorporated commercial development.
  • Grid Capacity & Reliability: Assessing the continuous electrical load required by data centers on the ERCOT grid.
  • Groundwater Permitting Process: Discussion on how data centers acquire the permits to access ground water and who issues those permits
  • Economic & Community Footprint: Comparing the long-term impacts on county road maintenance, public safety services, and the county tax base.

The special called meeting will take place at the Parker County Courthouse, 1 Courthouse Square in Weatherford. The meeting is open to the public, and residents are encouraged to attend or view the livestream via the official Parker County website.
