’Cats set for move to 6A

Plenty of talent returning

As with many sports at Aledo, the Bearcats/Ladycats tennis program has a long history of success. And now that they have moved up to Class 6A for the first time, they aren't planning to let up.

A perennial power and district champions with regularity in both fall team tennis and spring tennis, the program returns plenty of talent for opponents to reckon with.

"Moving into 6A definitely creates some challenges. There are more teams in our region who have very good programs/tennis teams, and the ones that are really good are even better than those we faced in 5A," head coach Joe McCoy said.

Aledo won its district each of its final four years in Class 5A. Last season they advanced to the third round of the playoffs before falling to another perennial toughie, Grapevine.

Aledo has five girls and five boys returning, including two-time individual spring state qualifier Lila Satterfield, a senior this year for the Ladycats. She will be the Line 1 singles player and team with fellow senior Kjersten Loy as the top girls doubles team.

On the boys side, senior Ben Kurth is back as No. 1 in singles and doubles. He will team with senior Casen Freeland as the No. 1 boys doubles tandem.

Other seniors returning for the Bearcats are Mason Peters and Paxton Psencik, along with sophomore Tai Van, who will team junior Bailey Martin in mixed doubles.

Rounding out the returning Ladycats team are juniors Kieren Christensen and Vivian Beeby.

Joining the boys lineup this season are sophomores Colt Harp, Bennett Purcell and Ty Hudson. New to the girls lineup is sophomore Addy Avent and juniors Evie James Everett and Addison Cass.

Aledo will compete in District 3-6A with Granbury, Weatherford and Arlington programs Arlington High, Martin, Lamar, Sam Houston and Bowie.

"We have a great group of players and a great corps of seniors," McCoy said. "I am looking forward to watching our team compete for another district championship this fall."
