The shop opened in 2017 in Willow Park. Co-owners Shannon Byrd, Teresa Chisum, and Kim Mauzy felt the new location best suited their business because of the growth in the city and surrounding businesses.
The city of Aledo is putting in effort through approaches like a downtown-specific comprehensive plan, where they are taking into account citizen ideas while also being a part of The First Street Initiative by the Texas Historical Commission (THC) that “enables communities to learn more about downtown revitalization and historic preservation,” according to the THC website.
“We just want to be a part of that,” said Byrd.
Byrd Mill has experimented over the years with its product offerings but has returned to its roots, specializing in high-quality, affordable, gifting items.
To enhance retail sold at Byrd Mill, they collaborate with vendors providing a variety for customers to choose from. A few include Sissy & Bubs Boutique, doTERRA, Pet Wants, Sunrise Embry, 76008 Candle Co., and Just 3 Days. “It's all local [business owners] that want to do business, but [don't have] their own storefront, so we just work together,” said Byrd.
The new location also allows Byrd Mill to work alongside surrounding businesses with similar clientele, such as Emmacate, Two Sisters Teahouse, and Hello By Lauren. “I'm not here to sell stuff, I'm here to help a customer,” said Byrd. “We can highlight [the other stores] with us,” and through collaboration, they provide a range of products to customers to ensure satisfaction.
Shoppers are greeted upon entrance to Byrd Mill, guided to an item that fits their needs, the gift is wrapped up, and they're sent on their way. Byrd said she wants the store to be not only inviting and dependable for customers but also involved in the community. “I've never been as settled in a place as I feel here, and we've been here for two weeks,” she said. “I just want to stay here and give back to the community and be a part of everything that's going on.”
As Byrd Mill continues business in Aledo, the Ginkgo leaf within its logo represents a symbol of longevity, resilience, hope, and endurance. “That representation is exactly how we are,” said Byrd. Through moving, COVID-19, and vendor changes, the store remains strong, now on the corner of Front Street. “[The store is] the most beautiful it's ever been. I think it's exactly where it belongs,” said Byrd. “It just feels hopeful.”
