Before picking up a schoolbook for the first time this semester, the Aledo Bearcats tennis team has been picking up their racquets plenty. With school starting Aug. 12, they had already played nine matches, standing at 6-3.
Their 10th match, ironically, was taking place at press time at home against Amarillo Tascosa — immediately following the first day of school.
Their most recent match was a 12-7 home win against another perennial power, Grapevine, on Aug. 10.
“That win gives the Bearcats some great momentum heading into their final two [predistrict] matches this week. The team has shown tremendous fight, resilience, and competitiveness throughout these matches, and they are ready for the challenges ahead,” head coach Joe McCoy said.
Over this past weekend, the Bearcats traveled to Abilene for four matches at Hardin-Simmons University. They split them, defeating Wall 14-5 and Hereford 14-5, along with losing 15-4 to Canyon and 10-9 to West Plains.
In the loss to Canyon, six of the 15 losses went to a third-set tiebreak, while five of West Plains’ 10 wins did the same. In the win over Hereford, Aledo capitalized on winning five third-set tiebreakers.
Aledo will wrap up its predistrict play against visiting Boswell on Friday, Aug. 14 at 4 p.m. They open District 3-6A play at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 18 at Granbury.
This is Aledo’s first season in Class 6A after years of dominating their district at the 5A level.
