AISD bans mechanized transportation devices

Posted

Aledo ISD Parents and Guardians -

If we have not met before, I’d like to introduce myself. My name is David Stevens, and I’m the police chief for the Aledo ISD Police Department and the district’s director of safety and security.

Aledo ISD does have its own police department, and we work alongside our city police departments, the county sheriff’s department, and state troopers to ensure our community is safe — in our case more specifically as it relates to our Aledo ISD schools.

Today, I’d like to communicate an important change that we are making related to off-road and personal transportation devices on school property. We are immediately instituting a ban on the operation of electric and human-powered transportation devices for those under 18 years old on school property.

I understand that this is a big change, but I hope you will agree with me that keeping our kids (and staff and visitors!) safe is our priority. We have seen and responded to numerous tragic and even fatal incidents in our community over the last several years involving motorized, electric, or human-powered vehicles and transportation devices being used by students. It is our duty and responsibility to help protect our youth and mitigate the risk for injuries. Please help us in discussing these rules with your child(ren) before arriving on campus. You will also soon see this signage at all of our campuses.

To reiterate: To help ensure the safety of students, staff, and visitors, the operation of any off-road, non-registered motorized vehicle or electric or human-powered personal transportation device by individuals under the age of 18 is prohibited on all school campuses and school-owned property, regardless of time of day.

This prohibition includes, but is not limited to:

  • Dirt bikes
  • Mini bikes
  • ATVs and UTVs
  • Go-karts
  • Golf carts
  • Electric bicycles (e-bikes)
  • Electric scooters
  • Gas-powered scooters
  • Bicycles
  • Skateboards
  • One-wheel devices
  • Any similar motorized or non-motorized personal transportation device

Where does this apply?

These devices may not be operated on school parking lots, sidewalks, athletic facilities, playgrounds, courtyards, or any other school-owned property unless specifically authorized by school administration for an approved school activity. Persons under 18 are required to immediately dismount from any such device as soon as they get to the district property’s edge and must walk it from that point. The devices must be walked until they are secured at the appropriate parking or storage location and/or until off district property. This policy is intended to reduce the risk of injury of all persons.

Please note if your student attends McKinney Elementary and/or McAnally Middle School, you will be receiving separate, more specific communication about your campus and this change from your principal shortly.

Consequences

Individuals found operating prohibited devices on school property may be directed to leave the premises immediately. Depending on the circumstances, additional disciplinary action or enforcement measures may be taken in accordance with school district policy and applicable law.

We appreciate everyone's cooperation in helping keep our school campuses safe for all students, staff and visitors. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at dstevens@aledoisd.org.
