In what could be a potential Class 6A playoff matchup, Aledo and Southlake Carroll, two of the most successful high school programs in Texas, matched up in a scrimmage Thursday, Aug. 20.
The Bearcats took the scrimmage 21-7. Both teams rotated possessions for the start of the game. While scrimmages are usually to be taken with a grain of salt, there were lots of positives for the Bearcats overall.
Aledo’s senior quarterback and transfer from Lewisville, Tre Williams, passed for two touchdowns, connecting with junior receiver Maddox Nurse and senior Kane Lanier. Sophomore running back Izzy Roberts rushed for an 80-yard touchdown late in the scrimmage.
Defensively, the Bearcats had a physical showing. They forced multiple turnovers, including a goal-line stand and fumble. Junior linebacker Kade Stephens came down with an interception.
However, Aledo head coach Robby Jones was adamant the team still had things to work on.
“Defensively, we gave up some big passes; those are the things that we gotta make sure that we don’t do,” Jones said. “That’s what you’re gonna see with a lot of 6A programs, if you give them time to throw the football they’ve got the athletes to go downfield and make plays downfield. We’ve gotta be able to do that ourselves.”
Despite scrimmages not meaning much in the grand scheme of things Jones emphasized how important this one was for season preparation.
“Once we get into game prep, like we’re gonna do this coming week with North Crowley, we’re going to be able to game plan a little bit and know what we’re going into the game attacking them with,” Jones said.
Jones also spotlighted the efforts of Williams.
“Tre did a good job of breaking the pocket and finding open receivers down the field, and our first touchdown was on that,” Jones said. “He bought some time with his legs, and he has really good vision down the field when that happens.”
The Bearcats kick off regular season play with a non-district game against North Crowley at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28 at Crowley ISD Stadium.
